4 ways to take care of your digestive system in the morning

We all have our morning routine, but does yours include taking care of your insides? Here are some easy ways to get your gut going each morning.

1. Get moving

Exercising first thing in the morning is a great way to kick-start your mind and body and prepare for the day ahead. And it’s also good for your gut. Physical activity can help you channel energy and emotions in a positive way and relieve excess stress. TIP: As soon as you get out of bed, try a few yoga poses, do a few squats, or go for a morning jog. If you find something you enjoy, there’s a better chance you’ll stick with it.

2. Eat a good breakfast

A wholesome breakfast is key to starting your day off right and filling your gut with good nutrients. Choose foods rich in fibre and protein which will provide the energy your body needs to get through the day. TIP: An easy and tasty way to get both fibre and protein in one breakfast is to add unsweetened muesli and a few chopped nuts to yogurt. Eggs, fruit and veggies are all good choices as well.

3. Massage your stomach

It may sound a bit silly, but gently rubbing your tummy can provide inner calm and soothe your insides, which can help alleviate stress. A calm gut is a happy gut! TIP: It’s easy to incorporate a little massage into your morning. Just spend a few minutes massaging your belly in the shower, when you’re putting on lotion, or lying in bed.

4. Connect with your inner self

Studies have shown that practicing meditation and mindfulness can help increase focus and improve physical and mental performance. Whichever techniques you choose, try to start your day from a place of calm and inner balance. It’s good for your mind, and your gut. TIP: Take 5 minutes each morning to concentrate on your breathing and try to still your mind. Sit comfortably with straight posture and focus on deep, regular breaths.
