Get In Balance - Making More of Your Creativity

Being naturally creative is very useful in both your personal and professional lives: it enables you to think outside the box, find solutions to seemingly unsolvable problems and bring a sense of originality to everything you do. Here are some suggestions to really make the most of your creative side at work and in your free time.

Being creative at work

The difference between imagination and creativity is acting upon your ideas, and there's no better place to do this than at work, as your colleagues and clients will appreciate and benefit from your creative drive!

Ensure that your working environment is conducive to your creativity. What does this involve? Plenty of light and comfortable surroundings will get those creative juices flowing. Take short, regular breaks to refresh your mind and let those ideas come together naturally.

If you feel the pressure of a tight deadline, set an alarm, then take off your watch, put your phone away, and let your colleagues know you need some time to yourself. When you don't see the seconds ticking away, or the pressure of anyone looking over your shoulder, your mind will relax and imagination will take over.

Free time creativity

Your free time is when your creativity can really let loose without having to focus it on work-related projects. Tap into your creative wellspring whenever you have some free time by writing down ten different ideas. These could be related to anything: from ways to celebrate a friend's birthday to the different uses of a paperclip (a test used in a study to evaluate creativity.) Think of it as a warm-up exercise for your imagination!

Trying new hobbies is a great way to get the most out of your creativity. It is when we are faced with new and stimulating situations that our minds stretch themselves. Activities to try could include a photography class, learning a new instrument or challenging yourself to a difficult recipe.

Speaking of challenging yourself, make sure you don't fall into a rut in your time off by setting yourself creative, imagination-stirring challenges. Can you make a delicious dinner with only five food items? Can you sketch every person you saw on the train today? If you only had one word to describe each member of your family, what would they be? These little restriction-related games force our minds to focus, remember, imagine and think.

In order to prime your mind for creativity, make sure you are getting enough sleep every night. Too little sleep will leave you feeling groggy and unfocused in the morning, which does not encourage the imagination! A good night's sleep and plenty of hydration is the perfect recipe for a creative mind, both in and out of the office.
